Unemployed men queuing at a labour exchange, October 1931. By August 1931, employment in Britain had risen to two million, its highest level since 1921. Tensions due to unemployment and the devaluation of the sterling saw a drop in wages that led to riots, strikes and even a mutiny by September 1931. The rise in unemployment was due to the world economy slump after the Wall Street crash of 1929 and did not just affect Britain, but also Europe and America. Photograph by Stirling., 7037183
