Mill worker processing jute, Scotland, 1932.
Titel Mill worker processing jute, Scotland, 1932.
Caption A photograph of a woman 'leafing' jute in a Dundee mill, Scotland, taken by an unknown photographer for the Daily Herald newspaper in March 1932. In the nineteenth century, Dundee underwent an economic boom as it built on its existing textile industry, becoming known as 'Juteopolis'. Jute production in Dundee ceased during the twentieth century in the face of increasing competition from Indian manufacturers. Jute is a plant fibre used for making a number of products ranging from rope to mats and bags. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers., 6988409
