'Excavating in deep cutting', 1915-1918.
Titel 'Excavating in deep cutting', 1915-1918.
Caption A photograph taken by an unknown photographer during 1915-1918 of a group excavating a deep cutting in Britain. Planks laid down as walkways give little protection against the mud and pools of standing water in the cutting. Children labour too. Today, they would be protected by UK employment law. During World War One, many British women and children took up what was seen as 'men's work' to support the war effort. This photograph has been selected from an album entitled, 'Women's Work in the War 1915-1918'., 6974106
