Caption Ethiopian Highlands. ëSunrise RestaurantíTsehay Mewcha, restaurant owner and saving and credit scheme member serves customers.Delenta Woreda is based on a dramatic plateau 2, 900 meters above sea level in the central highlands north of Addis Ababa.ëSunrise RestaurantíSet in the vast flat landscape of the Delanta plateau a few wood and mud built buildings are nestled together. Local farmers, school teachers and travellers through the area know that this is a haven for good food and drink but from the outside youíd never know this was the Sunrise Restaurant belonging to Tsehay Mewcha, member of the community Savings and Credit scheme. In a lull between customers, as coffee roasted on a metal ëfermiloí charcoal stove, Tsehay talked to us about the loan she got through the scheme started by Oxfam and what she has achieved.Interview:ìI heard about this scheme by accident. There was a meeting when Oxfam staff came to discuss with the community and hear from us. I went along by chance to hear what was said and found out about the scheme. After it was established we registered as members and were told to save money, whatever we could.î ìAt first I started to save money as best I could until I could get credit. I already had some land and a traditional hut. With the credit I expanded my house and added a tin roof so I could start to serve food and drink to customers. I started to sell the local beer called ëtallaí to anyone who came. From the profits I began to educate my children. I donít know all the costs of school but I had to pay for many different things such as uniforms, exercise books, clothes and food. Selling food and beer to people helped me save more and save incase there was a drought. I am not the only one, there are a number of people who have done things like me and taken credit from the scheme in this way.îìPreviously all I had was a small plot of land which often wasnít big enough for the family to eat from.
