Line of Sea Cadets, c 1900.
Titel Line of Sea Cadets, c 1900.
Caption A snapshot photograph of seven young Sea Cadets lined up in height order, linking arms, whilst the youngest child holds the next boy's hand. A Sea Cadet Captain stands watching them nearby. The ease with which snapshot photographs could be taken encouraged such light-hearted or humorous subject matter. The Sea Cadets are a youth movement based upon the customs and traditions of the British Royal Navy. During the Crimean War in the 1860s 'Naval Lads Brigades' were formed to help orphans. In 1914, with the sponsorship of the Admiralty, the Sea Cadet Corps was formed. Originally a shooting term, the word 'snapshot' was first linked with photography in the late 1850s, when it was used to describe a photograph taken with a brief exposure. Over time, snapshot came to mean any amateur photograph taken with a simple camera., 6998014
