Poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) as part of its ‘Winter Pastimes’ series, a series of four posters focusing on cultural activities. This poster is promoting rail travel to whist drives, card parties and social clubs and is illustrated with game boards, chess pieces, playing cards and dice. As the text beneath the image indicates, the artist executed the illustration in tempera, here called ‘the medium of the 16th century painters’.
