Caption A contemporary report in November 1969 ran: ‘The Kennedy clan gathered today at their Hyannis Port compound as its patriarch, Joseph Kennedy, 81, slipped steadily towards death. Mrs Jacqueline Onassis, widow of President John Kennedy, rushed from Greece via London to join the family. The sole surviving son, Senator Edward Kennedy, was by his father’s side along with his mother Rose. The one-time ambassador to Britain suffered what Dr Robert Watt described as “a minor heart attack”� over the weekend. He was given last rites by a Roman Catholic priest yesterday. This morning Mr Kennedy’s son-in-law, Sargeant Shriver, United States Ambassador to Paris, said: “The end is only a matter of hours away”�., 6966715
