Scoresby's 'Marine Diver' water bottle, 1811.
Titel Scoresby's 'Marine Diver' water bottle, 1811.
Caption William Scoresby Jnr (1789-1857), was a whaling captain and Arctic scientist. Dissatisfied with the water bottles he had been using for taking deep sea water samples, he designed and constructed one of brass in 1811 (his 'Marine Diver') which was better suited to work in deep water. It was lost in 1817 when the rope broke. This replica is based on Scoresby's description and drawing, and was made by a Science Museum craftsman., 6965186
