Carte de visite photograph by H J Whitlock of Birmingham. John Lubbock (1834-1913) was born in London, the son of the astronomer and mathematician Sir John William Lubbock. He became an MP in 1870, initiating various reform bills, including the creation of Bank Holidays in 1871. As a scientist, Lubbock’s interests lay in entomology and anthropology. He wrote three books: ‘Prehistoric Times’ (1865), ‘Ants, Bees, and Wasps’ (1882), and ‘The Pleasures of Life’ (1887-1889) as well as some more general essays on life., 6955517
