Industrial clerk is a 3-year recognised apprenticeship in industry and commerce.

Industrial clerks manage business processes in companies.

In materials management, they compare offers, negotiate with suppliers and oversee goods receipt and storage. In production management, they plan, control and monitor the manufacture of goods or services and prepare order documents.

Their areas of responsibility in sales include preparing calculations and price lists and conducting sales negotiations with customers. They also develop marketing strategies. If they work in accounting or finance, industrial clerks process, post and check transactions arising in business transactions. In human resources, they are involved in recruitment and selection and plan personnel deployment.

School Subjects

  • Mathematics (e.g. to calculate the costs of production materials or salaries)
  • Economics (e.g. to understand business processes)
  • English and other foreign languages (e.g. for international customer or supplier contacts)
  • German (e.g. for processing personnel documents or in written and oral customer contact)

Requirements

  • Commercial thinking, negotiating skills and assertiveness (e.g. conducting cost-effective negotiations with suppliers of production resources)
  • Communication skills, willingness to engage with others, and customer and service orientation (e.g. advising customers and taking customer wishes into account)
  • Care and ability to concentrate (e.g. when creating parts lists and work plans)
  • Organisational skills (e.g. planning and managing the production of goods and services)
