Caption Sudan, Um El Kher Leishmaniasis or kala azar is transmitted by the bite of an infected female sand fly. Kala azar, untreated is fatal. The disease is characterized by irregular fever, substantial weight loss, swelling of liver and spleen and anaemia. First line treatment relies on the pentavalent antimonials Sodium stibogluconate, which is very expensive (up to 1500 USD for a single treatment) and need to be given by injection, often for several weeks. since 1997, a severe Kala Azar epidemic has been raging in Gedaref state in Eastern Sudan. During this time, Medecins Sans Frontiers Holland (MSF) commenced a treatment center in Um El Kher and treated over 11, 000 patients During the Kala azar season, normally during rainy season, more than 600 patients are admitted. The center is self-sufficient, has diagnostic facilities provides daily treatment to patients as well accommodation, food, water, etc to admitted patients and family members who take care of the patients during the weeks of treatment.
