In the 1930s public health and nutrition was an important social issue. Milk, though a healthy and cheap drink, was primarily perceived as a drink for children. Milk bars, an American idea based on typical city bars, sold a variety of exotic-sounding milk cocktails - such as 'Bootleggers' - and as such this was a good means of marketing milk to adults. The first milk bar opened in Fleet Street, London in 1935, and by 1936 10 were established in London. WWII ended the milk bar, although the milkshake survived., 7032405
