Caption One of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s designs for Clifton Suspension Bridge at Bristol. In 1830 Brunel, aged only 24, won a competition to design a bridge to cross the gorge over the River Avon. Work on its construction began the following year. However, the project was halted when the money ran out and the bridge was not completed until 1864, four years after Brunel’s death. Brunel’s original plans included ornamental stone towers in the ancient Egyptian style fashionable in the 1830s, but they were completed to a more austere design., 7004828
