Caption Cracked soil of the Rio Tinto river bed. The river and its natural red waters are characterized by a high acidity of between 1.7 and 2.5 pH with high content of heavy metals of mostly iron, copper, cadmium and manganese. However, in its waters micro organisms live that feed only on minerals and adapt to extreme habitats. Such organisms are both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, including among the latter some species of fungi and algae endemic to the river. Thus, NASA chose its habitat to study the possible similarity to the Mars atmosphere. In summer, when the water levels drop and temperatures rise, sediments acquire some bright colors and multiple forms, Spain, Sevilla, El Madroño, Río Tinto, 2824485
